Hello Gardeners!

Linda Sonner would like to invite the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners to come to her garden this coming Sunday, September 20, from 3 to 6 pm.  She said that it was so wonderful to see do many of the group at the Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary last Tuesday night, that she thought a social time in the daylight on a Sunday afternoon would be nice.

Everyone please wear a mask and keep social distance.

Linda says, “As with all gardens this time of year, especially with this past dry summer, my garden is on the decline.  Everyone will have to look past the weeds and sorry looking shed that is due for some tender loving care in the next week or so.”

Also, her lawn is in a state of transition from a monoculture of grass to a more natural future. Transitions may look messy, but they're so exciting!

Come visit a garden in seasonal transition!

Open Garden at Rosie McVay’s

Rosie McVay will open her garden from 4 to 6 pm on Tuesday, July 14. This year we have different rules,  Everyone brings their own drink and snack and (chair if they wish).   Come join Rosie (at a respectful distance, masks at times may be helpful!)

Rosie has a peaceful, conservation garden. The garden features a labyrinth in the front garden and in the back a fenced vegetable patch, fruit trees, berries and masses of perennials. A pavilion roofed with solar panels and a water feature with cistern filled with rainwater from the roof of the house complete the conservation theme.

Update

Robin Lang will open her garden from 4 to 6pm on July 8 (Wednesday).  This year we have different rules,  Everyone brings their own drink and snack and (chair if they wish).   Come join Robin (at a respectful distance, masks at times may be helpful!)

Robin has 1/2 acre, part wooded area she has tried for 27 years to rid of prickly plants and get some natives. Her latest project is turning a major part of the back from lawn to native plants. She started this 3 years ago and In the second year a huge black locust tree had to come out, changing shade to sun.  Her yard remains a work in progress, but Robin says it is starting to look better. It's more natural.

Hello Gardeners!
Our plants will be very happy after Friday's much-needed rain, and I was very happy after our work day on Tuesday.  Thank you so much to Al, Terri, Jo, Sue P., Carol, Nancy H., and Deb for all of your hard work hauling mulch, weeding and weed-wrenching!

I have some feathery photos for you today.  The first one is of the planters next to the Peace Bridge and Batavia's City Hall.  Check them out on your way to the Riverwalk.  The astilbes are gorgeous right now!

The middle photo is of elderberry flowers.  Anyone who has seen Arsenic and Old Lace knows that you can make wine out of the berries, but I recently learned that it is easy to make Elderflower Cordial using some lemons and sugar.  Here is the link to a recipe: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/homemade-elderflower-cordial.  Citric acid can be found in the home canning section of the grocery store.  Just make sure that you do not include any stems or leaves since they are NOT edible.

The final picture is of vandals caught in the act.  They have been remoreslessly messing up the Riverwalk and trampling our precious woodland plants, even after we asked them to leave.

Since next Saturday is July 4th, and since we still have some mulch to spread and weeds to pull, we will have a short work day on Tuesday, June 30th starting at 8:00.  If you have them, please bring gloves, eye protection, weed diggers, clippers, loppers and/or a shovel.  If it is raining more than a light sprinkle, please do not come.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Gardeners!

It is now officially summer, and as you can see from the photos we have butterfly weed and roses blooming in the little prairie at the Wildflower Sanctuary.

We also have a nice big pile of mulch, so there will be a work day on Tuesday, June 23rd.  We will be meeting on the east (wooded) side of the Riverwalk starting at 8:00 am, and would love to have your help from 6 feet away!  If you are not into moving mulch, we have crown vetch in the little prairie that needs to be pulled, brick pavers that need to be weeded and edged, and some small trees that need weed wrenching.

If you have them, please bring gardening gloves, eye protection, a shovel, clippers, knee pads and a weed digger. Do NOT come if if is raining more than a little drizzle.

Have a great day!

Hello Gardeners,

Our next work day will be Tuesday, June 23, and I will have details about where to meet, etc. when it gets closer.

We have a couple of very unique plants at the WFS.  The first picture is of our "Compass Dock".  It is in the little prairie area between the sidewalk and the Riverain parking lot, and is a hybrid of  Prairie Dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum) and Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum).  All of the plants in the Silphium family have thick, scratchy leaves and then yellow sunflower-like blooms at the end of the summer.  Sorry, I do not know which plant was the mom and which was the dad, but a bee was probably the matchmaker since they are the main pollinators for Silphiums.

Now that we have some beautiful weather, I encourage you to take a walk on the wild(flower) side, and see what you can find.

Sarah

Come visit my garden.....

Nancy Hollmeier has suggested members of the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners try a Summer “Visit My Garden” but this year with different rules.  Everyone brings their own drink and snack and (chair if they wish).  She has offered to be the first to do this and help us see if this may be a way to come together in gardening this summer.  Come join Nancy (at a respectful distance, masks at times may be helpful!) and see her garden June 30, 4 - 7 pm.  Rain date, July 1, same hours.

Nancy lives at 415 Maple in Batavia and can be reached at (630)482-1133. If this works, we will try other “Visit My Garden” opportunities this summer.

Hi Everyone!

A big thank you to Terri and Nancy H.!  They did not let talk of weeds, mud, or a heat wave scare them on Tuesday, and they cleaned up the previously flooded Riverwalk and a lot of weeds.

Thank you too, to Al for the wild ginger plants!  They seem to be taking hold.

We will be having another unofficial work day at the WFS on Saturday, June 13 at 8:00, and it would be great to have your company from 6 feet away.  Please note the earlier start time due to summer heat.  We will be working in the shade to clean up weeds and overhanging plants along the Riverwalk starting at the kiosk on the east side and working towards the dam.  If you have them, please bring gardening gloves, knee pads, clippers, loppers, weed diggers, etc.  Some water, a snack and a mask would also be a good idea.

The first photo is a page from a book called Illinois Wildflowers by Don Kurz.  These yellow flowers are not at the WFS, but have been popping up in gardens all over the Fox Valley, so folks have been asking what it is.  Butterweed is native to southern Illinois, but has been making its way north.

The other picture IS of native beauties that are blooming now at the WFS.  Take a stroll on the riverwalk to see them in person, along with anemonies, yellow iris, and golden Alexander.

Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone -

Two things -
1) We've had a request for Mayapples. If you have a lot of them and are willing to sell / give them to someone in the community, let me know. I'll get you in touch with the person.

2) The wonderful Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary! Be sure to visit sometime soon, it is amazing this time of year. So much in bloom!

Sarah Kimber has let us know that the flood waters have gone down, but more rain is on the way this week, so our next (informal) work day will be Tuesday, June 2 starting at 9:00. We will be cleaning up dirt left from the flooding and also weeds on the east (wooded) side. If you have them, please bring gloves, clippers, loppers, weed diggers and a flat shovel or broom. Also, please remember that we still need to stay at least 6 feet apart and bring our own snacks, water and masks.

Be well, and enjoy the beautiful weather!

The turn-out on Tuesday was fantastic!  A big thank you to Al, Terri, Carol, Nancy H., Deb, Luna and Lindsay, and a warm welcome to our newest volunteer, Lindsay Sommers!  Thank you too to Jo for donating Fire Pinks, Bottle Gentians and Royal Catchfly plants.  They definitely are watered in, and will be gorgeous when they bloom!

This is where I usually tell everyone to take a stroll through the Wildflower Sanctuary, but this week I am not going to, because it is flooded and closed. Terri pointed out though, that there are some fun things blooming up on the hill towards the compost bin and shed, so if it does stop raining, you can check out that part.

To give you a little flavor, I have attached some photos:
1.  The bench on the east side of the WFS where we usually put our stuff while we are working
2.  A family portrait taken before it started to rain: Jack, Jack Senior, Jack Junior, Jackie and Jacqueline
3.  A 2 foot long fish (carp?) swimming through our savannah

At home, I will be thinning out some yellow Siberian Iris and 'Husker red' Foxglove Beardtongue Penstemon.  Let me know if you would like some plants.

Things need to dry out a little bit (OK, a lot), so the next time I will be working at the Wildflower Sanctuary will be Saturday, May 23, starting at 9:00.  I will be cleaning up the area and hill between the cut and the Riverain parking lot.  The easiest way to get there is from the Riverain driveway.  If you have them, please bring gardening gloves, loppers, clippers, weed diggers, eye protection, etc.  Since there is still a virus on the loose, please remember that we need to stay 6 feet apart and bring your own water, snacks and mask.

Thanks for your help!

As much as we would love to hear about your gardening activities and catch up with gardening friends, everyone’s health and well being are most important to us.  We are cancelling the Tuesday, May 19 Batavia Plain Dirt Gardener’s general meeting and educational program.  Social distancing is one of the ways we are helping to slow the spread of the virus. Thank you for your understanding.

Please consider visiting the Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary, maintaining appropriate social distancing, and enjoy the emerging spring flowers.  Sarah is regularly holding “6-feet-apart” work days so there are opportunities to garden and see other gardeners in a safer environment.

And, please visit our Facebook page and post pictures of something wonderful growing in your yard.....and see the pictures of the flowers at the wildflower sanctuary.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of this information, feel free to call me.  If you need the phone number of a club member as you want to call and visit that way, let me know and I am happy to get that to you.  Contact me via phone or my email address dleesharp@sbcglobal.net.

Last weekend at the Batavia Wildflower Sanctuary, we planted Twinleaf and Meadowsweet, pulled and weed-wrenched weeds, and laid a cobblestone path.  Thank you so much to Terri H., Nancy H. and Deb M., and a big thank you to Laura W. for all of the plants!
The attached photos are a sample of what is blooming now: wild geranium (Geranium maculatum), and Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum).  Take a stroll along the Riverwalk and you will also see more spring bloomers, gosslings and lots of water.
We are still not having official work days at the WFS, but I will be there on Tuesday, May 12 starting at 9:00 am, and would love some company.  We will be cleaning up the crescent-shaped area on the west side of the WFS near the start of the boardwalk.  If you have them, gardening gloves, clippers, loppers, eye protection, a small weed wrench, and something for hauling clippings would all be handy.  Due to COVID-19, please stay at least 6 feet apart, bring your own tools, mask, water and snack.
Happy Spring!

Hello all!
Come take a six-feet apart stroll along the Batavia Riverwalk to see what is blooming.  Pictured is Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica).  There are other plants blooming too, but I don't want to ruin the surprise.

Some people wonder why so many of our plants have Virginia in the name if they are native to this area.  The answer is that in the 1700's when the plants and animals in North America were being discovered and named, Virginia was huge.  It extended to what is now Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and even part of Minnesota.

Welcome back to Deb McGrath!  She was a volunteer gardener in the past, and has returned after meeting Terri during a video conference.

Thank you so much to Al, Deb and Terri for your help last week!  A lot of honeysuckle and deadheads went to the brush pile, and Deb worked on Plot 22. (at least I think that is the right number)

We still cannot have official work days, but I will be at the Wildflower Sanctuary on Saturday, May 2nd starting at 9:00, and I would love some company.  I will be working in the area between the cut and the Riverain parking lot.  Gardening gloves, eye protection, clippers, and loppers would be handy to bring.  We still need to stay six feet apart and bring our own tools, water and snacks.

Thank you!

This is a great time of year to take a stroll around the Batavia Riverwalk and admire all of the spring wild flowers!  While you are there, see if you can find Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum) and Cutleaf Toothwort (Dentaria lanciniata).  Bloodroot (Sangunaria canadensis) and Bellwort (Uvularia grandiflora) are also blooming right now. (Pictured: Bellwort)

We are still not doing official workdays, but I will be there on Saturday, April 18 starting at 9:00, and I would love some company from 6 feet away.  I will be working on the hill on the east side of the WFS between the sidewalk and the compost bin.  There is a bunch of honeysuckle that has popped up, and still some dead-heading to do.  If you would like to join me, please bring your own tools, gloves, water and snack.  Clippers, loppers, eye protection and WEED WRENCHES would be handy if you have them.

Due to the Corona Virus, our planning meeting for Saturday at noon has been cancelled.  Instead, please email me with any suggestions that you have for the Wildflower Sanctuary this year.  Are there certain plants that you would like us to add?  Days of the week or month that are good for work days?  Things that you think we should work on?  We already have one vote for Tuesday morning work days.

Speaking of work days, our work day for Saturday at 9:30 is still ON.  We will be spread out enough that we should not have to worry about spreading germs.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate, but if it is raining or snowing enough to be uncomfortable, then we will cancel that too.

Thanks for your help and understanding!  Spring really is on the way!
