December Holiday Potluck Gathering

Our December meeting will be our traditional Holiday Potluck gathering.  We will meet on December 18th at 6:45 pm at the Batavia Public Library.  We will share a meal together, have a "white elephant" exchange, a raffle of some new gardening items, and our own Sarah Kimber will share a short 5 minute presentation on the wildflower sanctuary.

To participate in the white elephant exchange, we ask that you wrap up something that a gardener would use or something related to gardening or plants or hanging out on the patio/porch.  If you are unfamiliar with the concept, a White Elephant exchanges usually means to bring something you already have at home but no longer want or need (maybe a gardening book you never use anymore, an extra garden tool , a pair of gloves that are not your size, candles or a plant or something for the patio that you did not need but have in your "stash" of things, or any other re-gift possibility that you just cannot see yourself using any more as a gardener but think that another gardener might like).  Please wrap the item (even in a newspaper is fine!).  We will have them all on a table and everyone will get to pick one out from the bunch of them brought to the meeting.  The fun is in watching someone else have fun getting your item.  These are not to be an expensive item, this is just for fun.  If you do not bring one, no worries.  We have a few extras that are being brought in case they may be needed.

For the potluck, please bring an appetizer, salad, or dessert to share.  The club will provide drinks, chicken roll ups, plates, silverware and cups.  Sue is going to do her famous nut cups and a sparkling grape juice drink to get us started for the evening.

We hope you will join us.  This is always such a treat to get to visit with each other, share some crazy gift items, and enjoy the goodies each person brings to the table.

If you missed joining us in November, or you just want to see all the creative joy of making swags and some of your Batavia Plain Dirt Gardener friends, see the full album of pictures from our November meeting on the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners' Facebook page.  We had fun and our homes were brightened by these creations of nature.  Thanks to everyone who contributed materials for the swags and to Nancy Hollmeier for leading this creative bunch to swag completions.

Making Swags.....Tuesday, November 20th

The Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners meeting this month includes making a "swag" for the home.  Greenery supplies will be provided (for those who reserved it at a cost of $5) and gardeners are asked to bring the following:

1.  Scissors
2.  Pliers with wire cutter or other wire cutters (we will be wiring things to the greenery for decoration)
3.  Garden pruners (for cutting things scissors cannot)
4.  Any dried goods from your garden or trees (pine cones, seed heads, Ostrich Fern fiddle spore fronds, sweet gum cones, grasses heads, dried flower stalks, bush stems (dogwood red ones or yellow ones, especially), and so forth.

See you all at 7pm on Tuesday, November 20th.  If you have not yet reserved your greenery by contacting Diana Sharp or Lorayne Hrejsa, do so today!!!!  You can leave a message with Diana at (630)879-7578.  We will only bring enough greenery for those who have reserved it prior to Saturday night, Nov. 17th.

Social Activity with the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners

We are having a "J.Jill" night on November 15th at the J.Jill store in Geneva.  The event will be between 7pm and 9pm and is a "drop in" open house type of event (in other words, where you can come but do not need to spend the entire two hours in the store.)  The store is located at

118 Commons Dr.
Geneva, IL 60134
for directions call  630.262.9203

Come join us for some fun and some savings on your wardrobe or presents for holidays and birthdays.  The event is open to all club members and Batavia Plain Dirt Gardener blogpost members.  Coupons will be shared that evening at the store!  Enjoy shopping, gardening friends, and some refreshments during this fun event thanks to the generosity of the store owner who met several of the club gardeners!

November Meeting and Activity

Join us for the Batavia Plain Dirt Gardener's meeting November 20th.  We will be making "Evergreen Swags" to decorate our homes.  You will need to 1) reserve your spot in the activity (more on this below) and 2) collect dried material to decorate your swag.  Pine cones, seed heads, dried flowers, anything natural will add to the beauty of your project. If possible, bring extra and share!

To participate, we need a definite commitment and ask that you contact Diana Sharp to sign up.  We will only reserve materials for those who do this (call (630) 879-7578 and leave a message if no one answers).   The $10 cost offsets the cost of materials that the club will purchase for the project.  You will receive a $5 refund if you come and participate in the project.  If you do not reserve your swag, come anyhow and join in the fun.  This is sure to be a great meeting to visit with others while we make the swags.

The meeting is at the Batavia Public Library starting with social time 6:45pm, a short business meeting at 7:00 and the activity to immediately follow.
