Wildflower Sanctuary Plant Identification Walk

Saturday, May 30 at 9:00 am, will be a special day at the Batavia Wild Flower Sanctuary.  Valerie Blaine is director of Nature Education for the Kane County Forest Preserves, and she will lead us on a walk around the Sanctuary to identify plants for us.  Valerie will be able to tell us what to keep and what to pull.  It should be interesting for everyone, even those who do not volunteer at the WFS.  We will meet at the shady (east) end, and work our way around.  After the walk, we will be planting seeds and dead-heading in the little prairie, so please bring gloves, clippers, bucket, and a trowel if you can.
Hope you can join us!

May 19th - The Beautiful and Useful Plants of South Africa

Our May 19th meeting will feature "The Beautiful and Useful Plants of South Africa: Our Intimate Connection" giving us a a look at some of South Africa’s Useful plants on display at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. Some of these plants have traveled into our homes, kitchens and medicine cabinets. Plants seemingly are rooted where they grow, but many of these beauties have journeyed thousands of miles to enrich our lives. Join Rosie McVay in Part 2 of her South African plant adventure.

Join us at the Batavia Public Library in the large meeting room:
6:45pm - Social time
7:00pm - Business Meeting and Updates!
7:40pm - Main Feature Program

On the corner of Wilson and Hwy 31.

Help Needed Saturday - the Tours are Coming....

Our last chance to get the Wild Flower Sanctuary in shape for school groups will be on Saturday, May 16 at 9:00 am, so come join us if you are available.  We will meet at the west (prairie) side of the Sanctuary and work our way around.  There are still a few prairie plants to get into the ground, and some weeds here and there, so bring gloves, little shovels, clippers and weed diggers if you have them.   Warmer weather is predicted!

Thanks "Prairie Day" crew!

Thank you so much to Phyllis, Jo, Kathy, Sue, Ed, and Nancy for helping out at the Wild Flower Sanctuary on Wednesday!  Our Little Prairie looks great!
If you are missing a pair of black nitrile gardening gloves, Sarah Kimber found them. and will bring them to Tuesday's meeting.

"Prairie Day" this Wednesday at the WFS

We will be having a "Prairie Day" at the Wild Flower Sanctuary (downtown Batavia on the riverwalk) on Wednesday, May 13 gathering at 9:00 am.  We have a bunch of fun prairie plant plugs to plant, and some dead-heading is still needed.  If people could bring trowels for planting, clippers for dead-heading, a tarp or bucket for moving the clippings, that would be great.  Sarah will bring a watering can.

The "Prairie Day" gathering will meet on the sunny "pond" side where prairie plants thrive!  Come see what is coming up and help plant the new plugs!
And, mark your calendars for  Saturday, May 16, 9am for one more work day before the 2nd graders come and the school group tours begin.  Look for more information later this week.
We always enjoy seeing you and learning while we work together!
If you can join us for one or both events, please come!
