"Unusual and Seldom Used Plants for your Garden"
 Speaker: Mary Saba from the Growing Place
 After 20 years creating interior designs with gardening as a passionate
hobby, Mary Saba returned the classroom to pursue horticulture and landscape
design. Combining this with her hands-on gardening experience over many
climates and terrains has led to her deeper understanding of melding design
principles with a 'right plant in the right place' garden philosophy. This
past decade Mary has been managing The Growing Place's Design Team mission
of working with customers to develop successful and meaningful landscapes.  The program will include some new and noteworthy recent and/ or 2015 introductions.

Join us for some great ideas for the new gardening year!

2014-2015 Meeting Schedule

All 2014-2015 meetings (except February) are held at the Batavia Public Library in the meeting room just off the main lobby.  6:45pm social time, 7:00 pm business meeting, 7:25pm Speaker and main program.

October 21
On October 21st, John Janunas presented  "Birds, Blooms, Beavers and Bugs." A year of nature in Batavia. 

November 18 
Our Program will be "Seldom Used Plants in the Garden" with speaker Mary Sabo from The Growing Place.

NEW MEETING SPOT JUST FOR JANUARY - Holmstad Meeting Room, Homlstad complex is located on the corner of Hwy 31 and Fabyan Parkway.  Come in the south doors and turn right to find the meeting room.
 
Our January 20th speaker is from the Kane County extension center.  She is Mary Jo  Murphy a master gardener and her topic will be “Creating Wildlife Habitats in a Home Landscape.”

February  17
“THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS: An Introduction to Flower Structure and Terminology”

Jack Shouba is a teacher, botanist, and photographer. He has taught classes on flowers, trees, and photography at the Morton Arboretum for over twenty years. His photographs have been published in Chicago Wilderness  and Outdoor Illinois magazines and used on calendars, brochures, and websites. A resident of Campton Hills, he has been active in conservation for many years, and was recently presented with the Dick Young Award for Lifetime Achievement in Conservation by the Kane-DuPage Soil and Water Conservation District. 

March  17

Our March 17th program will feature Kane County Recycling Program Coordinator 
Jennifer Jarland and Kane county Sustainability Coordinator Ceciliia Govrik will talk on "Conscious Conservation and Effortless Efficiency"

            
April  21  
"Spring Insects in your Garden and What to Do About Them!" with Donna Danielson 
 Donna worked at the Plant Clinic at the Morton Arboretum for seven years and in the Research Department for seven years before that.  She holds degrees in Horticulture from College of DuPage and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois.  She still teaches part-time at the arboretum and at College of DuPage.

The Beautiful and Useful Plants of South Africa:  Our Intimate Connection. 
 
Enjoy looking at some of South Africa's useful plants on display at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town.  Plants seemingly are rooted where they grow, but many of these beauties have journeyed thousands of miles to enrich our lives.  You will be surprised to find them in our kitchens, medicine cabinets, and throughout our homes.  This is "Part 2" of "Rosie's South African Plant Adventure," an adventure you do not want to miss!
